And far too many of us, during Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine, have believed that. Of its three most consequential foreign wars, the Red Army lost two. And the Russian army of today is not the Red Army. It was disproportionately Ukrainians who fought their war to Berlin in the uniform of the Red Army. Russia can lose this war, and should, for the sake of Russians themselves.

Hipgnosis Songs Fund, the British company that helped kick-start the music industry’s rush for catalog deals — acquiring tens of thousands of songs by Justin Bieber, Neil Young, Shakira and others — but has seen its share price plummet, has reached a tentative deal to sell itself to Concord, a major independent music company, for $1.4 billion. Hipgnosis, which trades on the London Stock Exchange, said on Thursday that its board had given unanimous approval. But the deal still faces what could be a significant hurdle in the form of a contractual option held by an affiliated company to buy the catalog at a set price. Robert Naylor, the chairman of Hipgnosis, said in a statement: “The acquisition represents an attractive opportunity for our shareholders to immediately realize their holding at a premium, mitigating the risks we see ahead to achieving a material improvement in the share price.”Bob Valentine, the chief executive of Concord, which has a portfolio of labels like Stax and Craft, and large holdings in music publishing, added: “We believe we can integrate Hipgnosis’ catalogs into our wider portfolio of 1.2 million songs in a way that will deliver benefits for composers, performers and all our stakeholders.”

As China’s cities grow, they are also sinking. In 100 years, a quarter of China’s urban coastal land could sit below sea level because of a combination of subsidence and sea level rise, according to the study. “It’s a national problem,” said Robert Nicholls, a climate scientist and civil engineer at the University of East Anglia who reviewed the paper. Dr. Nicholls added that, to his knowledge, this study is the first to measure subsidence across many urban areas at once using state-of-the-art radar data from satellites. Subsidence in these cities is caused in part by the sheer weight of buildings and infrastructure, the study found.

The Direct File pilot program is rolling out in stages. The agency estimates that several hundred thousand taxpayers are eligible for the initial rollout in the 2024 tax season. Ussery died Thursday of congestive heart failure at an assisted living facility in Hollywood, Florida, his son Robert told The Associated Press on Friday. Ussery won the 1967 Derby aboard 30-1 longshot Proud Clarion. He picked up the mount after his original Derby horse, Reflected Glory, couldn’t make the race because of sore shins. “He was running on the hard surface and all the other horses were running in the sand like at the beach,” his son Robert recalled. Besides his son, Ussery is survived by four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

An off-duty pilot was charged with trying to turn off a plane's engines while riding in the cockpit. The pilot was sitting in the "jump seat" which gave him easy access to the cockpit's operations. The 'jump seat'Emerson was riding in the plane's cockpit "jump seat" when he began acting strangely, according to federal court documents. "As far as we know, this pilot was perfectly legal and perfectly certified to be riding in the jump seat," Brickhouse said of Emerson. According to a probable cause statement, Emerson told police he had taken the psychedelic mushrooms about 48 hours before he tried to stop the engines.

London CNN —The war between Israel and Hamas is unlikely to have a significant impact on the global economy, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Wednesday. Global oil prices had surged earlier in the week on fears that the war could cause wider instability in the oil-producing Middle East. But Yellen said Wednesday that the United States had not “in any way” relaxed sanctions on oil exports from Iran. But it cautioned in its latest World Economic Outlook report — finalized before the conflict erupted — that economic growth remained weak and patchy. The IMF shaved its forecast for global growth in 2024 by 0.1 percentage point to 2.9%.
